Abstract
Psilocybin and Psilocin (the phosphorylated and dephosphorylated forms of N-dimethylated 4- hydroxytryptamine) elicit intense and prolonged enhancement of the monosynaptic kneejerk reflex in the spinal cat. By contrast, 5-hydroxyy-tryptamine and bufotenin (its N-dimethylated derivative) transiently inhibit the kneejerk reflex. Phosphorylated bufotenin (5-phosphoryl-oxy-N-dimethyltryptamine) also exerts a weak inhibitory effect, as was to be expected since phosphoric acid is not essential in determining the type of action (see Psilocybin and Psilocin). Whereas the five substances exert differing effects on the reflex depending on their chemical structure, all increase blood pressure.
