Abstract
The authors give a short report of the pharmacology and mental effects of Psilocybin. . 4 male volunteers were given from 5 to 10 mg. Psilocybin sublingually. For 1 it was the first experience, while the other 3 had taken psychotropic drugs in previous experiments. The first effects began 30 to 60 minutes after the administration of the drug and lasted about 3 to 6 hours. The pre-experimental state was reached again after about 16 hours. . Mental and behavior changes: all 4 subjects showed increased irritability and changes in mood, but were oriented as to time, space and person. One had illusions of geometric patterns, 2 subjects were sleepy, the 2 others quite active. The speech was slow and at times slurred or even rapid and the thought process logical but slowed down. One subject was able to write a short essay with logical sequence association. Concentration and attention were significantly disturbed and perception only moderately disturbed. Time perception was disturbed in only one subject and depersonalization occurred in one subject. . Somatic symptoms: 1 subject had maximally dilated pupils, other somatic symptoms were light-headedness, nausea, photosensitivity and weakness in the leg. . All 4 subjects had difficulty in performing psychological tests. . Comment: The authors conclude that Psilocybin is an active chemical with psychotropic effects (5000- 10000mcg.). No true hallucinations occurred in his experiments but many factors do materially influence the course and outcome of such experiments (e.g. personality of observer, light and climatic conditions, purity of the product, emotional state and expectancy of the subject before administraiton of the drug).
