Abstract
Historical review of 3 Mexican magic drugs peyotl (Mescaline), teonanacatl (Psilocybin and Psilocin), and coatlxoxouhqui (plant of the ololiuqui seed) and description of the chemical structure. . During the analyses of ololiuqui seed it was discovered that 5 main elements of the alkaloid fraction belong to the ergot group. One of these alkaloids which was found only in certain inferior mushrooms until now, LA-111 (D-lysergic acid amide) had been investigated in men. The other 4 alkaloids (ergine, chanoclavine, lysergol, elymoclavine) are described and their relationship to LSD (common indole nucleus etc.) the currently most potent psychodysleptic drug, and to Psilocybin, is emphasized. LSD does not exist in nature. . The psychopharmacological properties of the psychodysleptic drugs, the subject of numerous publications, are described and compared. The therapeutic value of these drugs which not only cause states of excitation but also elicit subconscious material is emphasized. The recall of past experiences facilitates abreaction and helps discussion with the doctor. Because of these properties the psychodysleptic drugs are precious aids in psychotherapy.
