Abstract
The influence of GABA on the electrophysiologic effects of LSD in the avian tectum was studied. Methods 1-2-Wk-old chicks were prepared for recording bioelectric potentials from the optic tectum, electrocardiogram, blood pres-sure, body temperature and expiratory CO2. After a control re-cording of spontaneous activity and the evoked response from the avian tectum LSD-25 was administered by slow i.v. infusion. At the 1st indication of a change in spontaneous activity LSD was discontinued and GABA infusion started. GABA infusion was continued until the response evoked by photic activation of the intact retina was inhibited to a point where it was just discernible. The dose of LSD required to reach this criterion was 170 mcg/kg. The mean of the dose of GABA required to inhibit the evoked response was significantly greater after LSD (2.33 g/kg) than after GABA alone (1.64 g/kg). If GABA was administered first in a dose inhibiting the evoked response, LSD altered Spontaneous potentials, but did not reverse the depressed evoked response, Conclusion Results suggest that the central mechanism of action of all hallucinogens may involve the GABA system in the sensory areas of the CNS.
