Abstract
A Phenomenological Comparison of LSD and Schizophrenic States. A phenomenological comparison of the LSD and schizophrenic states inthe 14-25 yr age group is reported Methods 20 Young people with at least 5 experiences with LSD (average 34 75), 20 schizophrenics and 20 controls were studied. A wide range of phenomena were recorded from the taped interviews with the subjects in each group. Statistical tests were applied to study the similarities and differences between LSD and schizophrenic states. Phenomena were grouped as disturbances in visual perception, though/disorder, motor dysfunction, loss it of identity, delusions, time aberrations, changes in memory, emotional reactions and sensitivity to others. Results Visual perception disorders were found in similar numbers of LSD and schizophrenic states and there were significantly more auditory hallucinations in LSD cases than in schizophrenics Controls showed no hallucinations Thought disorders were common in all groups, except that controls had much better speech capacity than either test group. No difference was seen between LSD and schizophrenic states. Differences thought to be significant were found with regard to motor function between control and LSD group, identity between schizophrenic and other groups, delusions between schizophrenic and other groups, time between both LSD and schizophrenic groups and controls, memory between LSD and control group. The emotional response to the LSD state was most often happiness or elation, but to the schizophrenic state the response was most usually fear, depression or anxiety. Sensitivity to others increased in all mcgroups, but this resulted from the self-report method used. Conclusion There are several similarities in LSD and schizophrenic states, but there are important differences especially relating to the emotional reaction of the subject.
