“Mastral Spectral Studies of Ultraviolet Irradiated and Non-Irradiated Lysergic Acid Diethylamide Extracts from Illicit Preparations”.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was confirmed in illicit preparations by UV and MS spectra of LSD and its photochemical hydration product. LSD Sample was mixed with water and a few drops conc. NH4OH, and extracted with 1,2 - dichloroethane. The extract was re-extracted with 0.5 N H2SO4 and the aqueous layer split into 2 portions. Half was made alkaline with NE14OH and re-extracted into dichloroethane to provide residue A (LSD). The other half was scanned from 210-360 nm, a broad band with a maximum at cat 313 nm being given by LSD. The solution was then irradiated with long wave UV light for 5 minnd re-scanned over the same range, the presence of LSD now being indicated by a maximum at cat 294 nm. This photoproduct was re-extracted into dichloroethane to provide residue B. However' UV analyses with TCL have been subjected to criticism in the courtroom on specificity grounds. Thus conditions for obtaining the most intense molecular ion peak in the electron impact MS of LSD were investigated to provide the most characteristic data. Such conditions were given by a probe temperature of i80-195 , peak data being given. In addition, MS on residue B confirmed it as the hydrated product (see below). Thus a combination of UV and MS data on LSD and its photoproduct provided unequivocal confirmation for its presence in forensic samples. Using the described extraction method, over 1000 samples have been processed without spectral interference. iso-LSD And other stereoisomers, all also controlled drugs, were detected as LSD, but could be separated if necessary.
