Abstract
The effects of serotonin, morphine, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and typindole on cerebral evoked responses to dental pulp stimulation were studied. Method Rabbits anesthetized with 40 mg/kg nembutal received microinjections into the left lateral brain ventricle of 10-60 mcg/kg serotonin, 10-100 mcg/kg morphine (an M-serotoninblocker), 1-5 mcg/kg LSD (a D-serotoninblocker) or 80 mcg/kg typindole (a T-serotonin blocker). The primary response evoked in the contralateral dental zone of the cerebral cortex was recorded following stimulation of the dental pulp. Results Serotonin, morphine and LSD reduced the amplitude of the primary responses but typindole increased this amplitude. This indicates that the serotoninergic system in the brain can, through the intermediary of the M- and D-serotonin receptors, raise the activity of adrenergic structures and lower the activity of N-cholinergic structures involved in the formation of the functional pain reaction system, The opposite effect is mediated by the T-serotonin receptors.
