Abstract
PHENCYCLIDINE, 1 (1 PHENCYCLOHEXYL) PIPERIDINE, KNOWN AS PCP AMONG DRUG ABUSERS, WAS FIRST RECOMMENDED FOR CLINICAL TRIALS IN 1957. ABUSE OF THIS DRUG WAS REPORTED AS EARLY AS 1967. HOWEVER, IT WAS NOT UNTIL 1970 THAT PCP WAS IDENTIFIED IN NUMEROUS STREET SAMPLES SELLING AS MESCALINE, TETRAHYDROCANNABINOL (THC), PSILOCYBIN, AND LSD. ITS CURRENT WIDESPREAD USE AMONG STREET DRUG USERS MAY LEAD TO OVERDOSE INTOXICATIONS AND DEATH. INGESTION OF 10 MG OR LESS OF PCP MAY PRODUCE HALLUCINATION , AND A DOSE OF 100 MG HAD RESULTED IN A COMA FOR MORE THAN 24 HR. IN SOME INSTANCES, PCP INTOXICATIONS MAY GO UNDETECTED BECAUSE OF LACK OF APPROPRIATE METHOD OF ANALYSIS IN BODY FLUIDS. IT IS THEREFORE OF INTEREST THAT A SIMPLE, RAPID, AND ACCURATE METHOD OF ANALYSIS FOR PCP IN URINE AND STREET SAMPLES BE AVAILABLE.
