Abstract
Hepatic tyrosiine animotransferase and tryptophan pyrrolase activities were measured in rats at different time intervals after treatment with cannabis extract of known delta-9-THC content, with or without the four different psychotropic drugs, e.g., phenobarbital (50 mg/kg), reserpine (2.5 mg/kg), ampetamine (10 mg/kg), LSD-25 (50 mcg/kg). Cannabis extract (10 mg/kg) alone produced induction of tyrosine aminotransferase and tryptophan pyrrolase activities. Simultaneous administration of cannabis extract (10 mg/kg) and a single dose of (a) reserpine produced an additive effect and (b) pentobarbitol prolonged the duration of the cannabis extract induced activities of rat liver aminotransferase and pyrrolase activities whereas (c) amphetamine and LSD-25 produced neither any additive nor any potentiating effects on the activities of these enzymes. Moreover, chronic cannabis extract treatment (10 mg/kg for 15 days) alone or with the addition of single doses of any of the above drugs produced no noticable effect on the liver tryptophan pyrrolase and tyrosine aminotransferase activities.
