Abstract
THE EFFECT OF AND LSD OTHER CLOSELY RELATED DRUGS UPON CHROMOSOMES OF HUMAN WHITE BLOOD CELLS HAS BEEN STUDIED IN CELL CULTURES. THE BLOOD WAS OBTAINED FROM HEALTHY YOUNG ADULTS. IN CONTROL CULTURES SET UP CONCURRENTLY TO WHICH NO DRUGS WERE ADDED OF A TOTAL OF 2982 METAPHASES, 46 CHROMOSQMAL BREAKS WERE SCORED. THE WEIGHTED MEAN OF THESE WAS 0.016 PLUS-MINUS 0.011. OF 3 SETS OF CULTURES TO WHICH LSD WAS ADDED IN VARIOUS CONCENTRATIONS AND FOR VARIOUS PERIODS OF TIME, OF A TOTAL OF 1337 METAPHASES, 6289 METAPHASES AND 1492 METAPHASES, THERE WERE 15, 75 AND 10 BREAKS SCORED RESPECTIVELY. THE WEIGHTED MEANS IN THESE CASES HERE 0.011 PLUS-MINUS 0.008, 0.012 PLUS-MINUS 0.010 AND 0.007 PLUS-MINUS 0008. IN ALL OF THESE CASES THE BREAKS BELONGED TO A, B, OR C CHROMOSOMES. SIMILAR RESULTS WERE OBTAINED WITH DMT, DET, TRYPTAMINE GEL, 5-OH TRYPTAMINE, CHLORPROMAZINE, ARC HYDROCORTISONE SODIUM SUCCINATE. MITOMYCIN C SHOWED DEFINITE DAMAGE TO CHROMOSOMES. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT LSD AND RELATED DRUGS DO NOT HAVE ANY APPRECIABLE EFFECT UPON CHROMOSOMES OF HUMAN WHITE BLOOD CELLS VITRO.
