Abstract
The effects of lysergic acid diethylanide (LSD) and serotonin (5HT) on photically-evoked visual cortical responses were examined in immobilized, artificially respired cats. Amplitude changes of the primary components of the visual evoked potential were studied following microinJections of the drugs into the dorsal raphe and lateral geniculate nuclei (LGN). Intraraphe LSD (0.25-1 mcg) produced maximal increases in the first 3 components of the averaged cortical evoked responses (pl-nl, nl-p2, p2-n2) within 5 min. after injection (+25%, +20%, +42%, respectively N-10). 5HT (3-30 112), conversely, depressed all 3 components of the cortical potential, maximal effects occurring within 15 min. after injection (-23%, -29%, -27%; N-9). In the LGN, 5HT (30 mcg) also decreased each component of the cortical evoked potential, peak depression occurring within 10 min. (-23%, -29%, -33%; N=7). Similarly, intrageniculate LSD (1-2 mcg) elicited a depression of the visual evoked response within 15 min. after microinjection (-20%, -26% , N-9). Saline injection failed to elicit significant alterations in the evoked potential components in all animals tested. Thus, 5HT and LSD produced opposing effects on visual cortical responses following intraraphe administration but elicited parallel changes when injected into.the LGN.
