Abstract
The effects of 8-phenethylamine (PEA) d-amphetamine (AMPH) and LSD on spinal reflexes, autonomic signs and behavior were studied in the nontolerant and LSD tolerant (30 mcg/kg/day) chronic spinal dog. LSD (10 1mcg/kg) Facilitated the flexor reflex, produced the stepping reflex, increased respiration, pulse rate and temperature, produced a slight mydriasis, whining, heard raising, tongue ex trusions and tracking. Direct tolerance developed to all these effects except temperature. PEA (0.8 mg/kg/min Infused for 12 min) and A MPH (3.2 mg/kg) facilitated the flexor reflex, increased respiration and temperature, produced marked my driasis, slowed pulse, contracted the nictitating membrane, increased the latency of the skin twitch reflex and elicited typical stereotypic head movements. PEA Also elicited the stepping reflex but AMPH did not. Partial tolerance developed only to the ability of PEA to evoke the stepping reflex and retract the nictitating membrane. No cross tolerance to the effects of AMPH were observed and the AMPH-induced increase in respiration was significantly enhanced in LSD tolerant dogs. The lack of cross tolerance to AMPH and PEA suggests their modes of action differ from LSD.
