Abstract
The effects of phencyclidine, LSD and amphetamine on neuronal activity in the posterior parietal association cortex (PPAC) of the monkey were studied. Methods Multineuronal impulse activity of the PPAC was recorrlerl in 4 non-anesthetized stump-tailed monkeys (Macaca speciosa). Overall behavior and ability to reach for food rewards were monitored. Eye movements were observed by recording electro-oculograms. Phencyclidine (Sernylan) Parke-Davis (0.1-0 8 mg/kg) was given i.v. or i.m., d-amphetamine (MerckDarmstadt) (1-2 mg) was given s.c. and LSD-25 (10-20 mcg/kg, divided in 1 to 5 doses) was given i.v. Phencyclidine (0.5 mg/kg) elicited a rhythmic discharge and increased spontaneous activity and responses to visual somaesthetic and auditory stimuli. Increasing doses of phencyclidine produced a depression of spontaneous activity and also sensory responses. At recording sites where cellular responses were related to motor behavior similar effects on spontaneous ctivity were observed. The effects produced by LSD in this part of the cortex were much less distinct than those produced by Phencyclidine and the effects of amphetamine were small in comparison with phencyclidine .
