Abstract
LSD and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) effects on ant behavior were studied. Method Individuals of Formica pratensis Retz received LSD tartrate (Sandoz) 100 mcg/ml or THC 1 mg/ml (+ Tween 80 10%) in sugar water. Behavior patterns such as examination, jerking, threat seizing, licking and trophallaxis were determined ingroups of 1 drugged ant/10 starved ants per test. Larger tests involved queen adoption by groups of several hundred ants. Activity recordings were made by photoelectric monitors. Results Social contacts showed decreased frequency and duration of interactions after LSD (typically food sharing duration 10 sec at 24 hr: 0.3 control, 1.? LSD; duration > 10 sec 2.8 control, 0.8 LSD). Total duration of food sharing behavior > 10 sec was 132 sec (control), 26 sea (LSD). With large groups LSD impaired performance of foraging units, while not affecting home-based ants. THC effects were less pronounced: no significant influence was noted in small-unit behavior, but in large groups activity between nest and feeding-place increased compared to control.
