“Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors and the Serotonin Syndrome”.
Clinical Management of Poisoning and Drug Overdose. 1998;p459-463.
Abstract
The monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are a diverse group of agents that have been the center of considerable controversy during the past 40 years in terms of their place in therapy. This controversial position is largely caused by the many toxic reactions and interactions for which MAOIs are responsible. This chapter reviews the biochemistry of the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO), the pharmacology of the MAOIs, and the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of the various toxic reactions associated with these agents.
