    Abstract
    I read with interest the letter by Drs Ellis and Schimmel concerning a patient suffering from toxic effects following a possible ingestion of ecstasy. Recently we have been investigating the effects and toxicity of ecstasy (methylenedioxy methamphetamine, MDMA) in anticipation of its becoming a problem drug in New Zealand. One aspect of the research programme is to develop reliable methods for the estimation of MDMA and related compounds in biological fluids.
