Abstract
3,4-Methylenedimethoxymethamphetamine is a serotonergic neurotoxin in laboratory animals which has been used recreationally by humans. Cerebrospinal fluid metabolites were measured in five recreational users of MDMA who had individually taken 1, 17, 18, 22 and 33 separate oral doses of the drug. Single doses ranged from 125 - 313 mg per dose (approximately 2 - 5 mg/kg). Lumbar punctures were performed at least 6 weeks after the last dose of MDMA. Concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, homovanilic acid and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol were within normal limits in all five subjects. These data suggest that recreational doses of MDMA do not produce significant long-term alterations in serotonergic, dopaminergic or adrenergic activity in the central nervous system.
