“Chronic atypical psychosis associated with MDMA ('ecstasy') abuse”.
Lancet. 1991;338(8778):1335.
Abstract
The use of 3,4 methylenedioxymetamphetamine (MDMA, 'ecstasy') has become increasingly popular in northern Italy. It is sold as a tablet containing 100-150 mg of active ingredient, at a cost of 15-40 lire. MDMA has both hallucinogenic and amphetamine-like properties. Its use has been associated with anxiety, insomnia, confusion, flashbacks, and, very recently, chronic paranoid psychosis in two people. We present a patient in whom chronic atypical psychosis developed, together with a complex behavioural profile after MDMA use.
