Abstract
[EXCERPT]

To the Editor:

In the general practice of caring for my chronic pain patients who use opioid analgesics as a part of their treatment regimen, I request that they provide random urines for toxicology. The purpose of these evaluations is to clarify that the patient is taking the drug prescribed and is not taking other substances (either illicit or licit drugs prescribed by another physician). One needs to be aware, however, that a false-positive test result can occur. I report one such case here.
