I had been planning on trying mushrooms or another hallucinogenic for over six months, but I finally decided to try it with my friends who were visiting me from the east coast on Christmas Eve. I had previously only smoked pot and used alcohol. We only were able to buy one eighth of mushrooms, so we each only took 1/3 of it. Here is what I wrote in my journal the morning after my experience:

We took them at about 12:30 pm. Then we drove to K's friend's house, which was probably one of the most beautiful and serene places I have ever been. It reminded me of the villages up on the hills in Nepal, or a scene from a fairy tale. There were several different houses and cottages scattered throughout the place, with grassy fields and landscaping in between. There were little steps with lanterns on the side, a fountain, lots of buddahs, a tiny cottage, prayer flags and a view of a valley full of trees.

We didn't feel anything for about an hour and a half. All I felt was a slight body high and a slight spaciness. We went on the trampoline and I felt a bit unstable when I got off. We decided to smoke a joint. I was standing on top of a wooden play structure with a slide that was covered in vines. After smoking, I first felt the high from the pot, but I began to trip soon after. The trees in the valley appeared to be 2D figures, like cardboard cut outs. My depth perception was off so I felt like the horizon was not very far away, and the sky was like the roof of a snow globe. I felt like I was dominating the scenery. When we went in the little cabin I felt like Alice from Alice in Wonderland, way too big for the room and everything in it. We went out and lied on the grass in the field.

It was about this time that things got a lot more intense. My body high kept on getting more and more powerful, and my stomach felt worse and worse. It was hard for me to determine whether I was actually nauseous because the feelings in my body were so strong.
It was hard for me to determine whether I was actually nauseous because the feelings in my body were so strong.
It was like being at the peak of an orgasm for an hour and a half. Each time I went up to another level of physical feeling, my stomach felt worse. I lay on the grass face down for awhile and I felt like the grass was rolling and moving under me. I sat up and felt like the sun was a spotlight shining on me. We looked at the sky and it seemed like there were rainbow lines moving across it like the line that moves across frames of old film. My friend K was in another world, dancing around like a hippie. I suddenly understood the hippie era much, much better. I felt like a young child with no past experiences, walking around with my childhood friend at her old house. I also kept thinking that I was just an animal like every other animal. I felt disconnected from my own voice and thoughts. The ground in front of me was rolling and the grass was lighting up. I also saw the grass grow and become greener. In my head, my thoughts were incoherent and seemed to echo and overlap. Trees seemed to take on personalities and have messages for me. Animal Collective was playing on repeat in my head. But my stomach kept feeling worse and worse. Every time I stood up and tried to walk somewhere, I felt like a wave was rolling through me, or like I was a part of a wave and I couldn't stop rolling. The world was mooshy and soft. The ground beneath my feet and my body seemed to give way every time I moved.

Finally I gave up on being outside as it was getting cold and I went into the cabin my friends were staying in. When I peed, the curtain in front of me seemed to move and sway, and the pattern on it was fascinating and looked like tiny faces. I laid down in the bed and listened to Iron & Wine. Though the bed was comfortable, it seemed to breathe and move under me, and my stomach still hadn't calmed down. Finally, I was more fascinated by the music and the images in my head than by my stomach. I had kaleidoscopic visions inside my head, some like fractals, others were like a better version of the iTunes visualizer. I slowly became happier and happier. The music was insanely beautiful. I wandered around outside for a bit listening to it and truly felt like I was in a autumnal fairy world or a gorgeous music video. Andrew Bird was insanely beautiful and perfectly captured my mood. Arcade Fire seemed to have distilled the essence of life in their music. Olivia Tremor Control also fit my mood and situation perfectly, they, like, understood, man. I found myself more emotionally open and happy than I have been in a long time. I couldn't stop smiling. I felt like the weight and stress of my daily life had been lifted from me, and I realized I need to live more in the moment. I continued to listen to music happily as I began to come down. Eventually, I wanted K and R to come back as I missed human company. Finally, they did. We sat around and talked about the experience, went and got mexican food, and came home. I miraculously was able to make cookies, then went to sleep (with some difficulty). Definitely the most interesting Christmas Eve I've ever had. It was a good and valuable experience, I'm glad I decided to try it.
