Abstract
Studies on 5-hydroxytryptamine, reserpine, chlorpromazine, LSD, iproniazid and monoamine oxidase led to a working hypothesis that 5-hydroxytryptamine and norepinephrine are antagonistic chemical mediators regulating the central autonomic nervous system. The findings include the following: . Monoamine oxidase inactivates 5-hydroxytryptamine in vitro. This inactivation is blocked by oproniazid and, to almost the same extent, by LSD. . LSD blocks reserpine-induced potentiation of hypnotics but not chlorpromazine-induced potentiation of hypnotics. . Reserpine stimulates the parasympathetic system by releasing 5-hydroxytryptamine. LSD produces sympathetic stimulation by blocking 5-hydroxytryptamine. Chlorpromazine inhibits the sympathetic system by blocking norepinephrine.
