“Psychological response to d-lysergic acid diethylamide and its relationship to adrenochrome levels.”.
J.Clin.Exper.Psychopath.. 1959;20:125.
Abstract
Normal subjects and physically healthy alcoholics were given 100-300 mcg. LSD [orally]. The effects were compared with those of BOL-148, lysergic acid morpholide (LSM) and lysergic acid ethylamide (LAE-32). . Psychological effects: LSD produced the typical reaction. BOL-148 (500 mcg.) slightly increased tension. LSM (150 mcg.) elicited mild anxiety. . Plasma adrenochrome levels were increased by LSD but not by BOL-148 or LSM. . In vitro conversion of adrenalin to adrenolutin was increased by LSD and LAE-32 but not altered by BOL- 148. . Adrenochrome tolerance curves: The ability of the blood to destroy adrenochrome was reduced by LSD but not by BOL-148. . Ascorbic acid pretreatment slightly reduced the intensity of LSD effects and altered the quality. Disturbances in thought were less marked, suspicion was less evident. Subjects tended to be cheerful and/or euphoric. . It is thought that LSD inhibits an enzyme responsible for conversion of adrenochrome into dihydroxyindoles.
