Abstract
Unilateral stereotaxic injection of 5,6 dihydroxytryptamine (lO mcg) in the rat MFB produced, within lO days, a profound uni-lateral decrease of the forebrain levels of 5 - hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and dopamine (DA), but not of noradrenaline (NA). In these rats both apomorphine (1 mg/kg i.p.) and LSD (200 mcg/kg i.p.) elicited controlateral rotation, which was blocked by haloperidol (1 mg/kg i.p.). In contrast, other compounds thought to stimulate 5-HT receptors such as 5-hydroxytryptophan, N,N - dimethyltryptamine, -mescaline, 2-brom-LSD (BOL) and quipazine failed to elicit rotation. In addition, LSD and apomorphine also induced controlateral rotation in rats whose hemiforebrain levels of DA and NA, but not of 5-HT, had been markedly lowered by unilateral stereotaxic lesions of the MFB with 6-hydroxydopamine (.3.5 mcg). The results suggest that LSD, like apomorphine, directly stimulates dopamine receptors in the striatum.
