“Actions of Hallucinogens on Ants (Formica Pratensis)-I. Brain Levels of LSD and THC Following Oral Administration”.

Abstract
The uptake of LSD and THC in ants was studied. Worker ants of the species Formica pratensis were fasted a then fed sucrose solution containing 3H-LSD (100 mcg/ml) or 3H-THC (570, 750 mcg/ml). After termination of the food intake ants with extended hind quarters were removed and killed at various times The head ganglia (brains) were homogenized and the incorporate radioactivity was counted. Non-tritiated LSD (Sandoz), 50-500 mcg/ml in sugar water was fed to hungry ants for 2 days and the LSD content of the brains estimated by fluorimetry. The fluorimetric method was not sensitive enough to estimal brain LSD content after nontoxic doses but levels of about 7 ng w found following the 500 mcg/ml dose. Ants fed this concentration LSD could not move after 2 days but lay down making only weak movements of the legs and antennae. Peak values of 3H-LSD were found 12-24 hr after drug administration, and of 3H-THC after 24 48 hr. The peak amounts of LSD found were 150 mcg (0.040f administered dose) and of 3H-THC were 800 mcg (0.220f administered dose). The half time for the elimination of LSD was about 12 hr and for THC was about 3 days. THC was still clearly detectable after 10 days. The absorption of LSD and THC takes place not in the crop but in the intestine, to which access is considerably delayed in the ant
