In late January, Seattle approved the first official "safe injection" sites in the US. Although technically illegal under federal law, the local county and city say these sites are necessary to reduce health risks of the increased use of heroin and other opioids. Some US organizations now also give out Naloxone and IM syringes, distributed as "overdose reversal kits".

It's heartening to have civil administrations in the US recognize and endorse the basic concept of harm reduction. Such locations could be amazing community resources, offering life-saving training and tools to users, as well as to family and friends. These moves towards harm reduction could save many lives.

In February 1906, Jean Lanfray, a French laborer in Switzerland, murdered his wife and child and was quickly convicted, then committed suicide. His lawyers blamed the murders on his ingestion of 2 glasses of absinthe (accompanied by 7 glasses of wine, 6 glasses of cognac, 2 brandy-laced coffees, and a crème de menthe). The event contributed to a rising moral panic against the wormwood-infused liquor, leading to absinthe being banned in Switzerland, then across most of Europe.
